The sensory influence of bush walking or horse riding through the Australian bush with eucalyptus leaves and undergrowth crunching beneath your feet is a memorable experience. I have always collected leaves of olive green and warm rusty hues on my walks with plans to somehow include them in my next work or paste them into the sketchbook. Ancient maps and birds-eye views of the landscape first interested me after trips to Pompeii in Italy and the endless walls of painted fresco maps in the Vatican Library. My ever present compositional layouts for collages and paintings owe a great deal to the design elements of those maps. Trips to Europe and my love of Art History especially medieval culture and folklore, manuscripts and the architecture of the Romanesque era have left me with a strong appreciation for rich color and pattern. The deep crimson reds, siennas and umbers of Italian wall frescoes have always set my imagination reeling. Poetry and literature have been a force throughout my work and whatever I am reading at the time, be it T. S Eliot’s, J. Alfred Prufrock, Patrick Suskind, Jeanette Winterson or Angela Carter there is some influence there with passages of text. Portfolio Jennifer Thomas: ceramics, art, paintings. Jennifer Thomas, Jennifer A. Thomas, J. Thomas, J.A. Thomas, ceramics, art, paintings. The visual film making style of Peter Greenaway has always fascinated me, especially the idea of layers of imagery, translucent and transient. I think a lot about the layers of the earth, both the physical and the spiritual. What has happened before in this exact place? Since arriving in Japan in 2002 new themes have embedded themselves in my psyche; space for breathing, in a personal sense and also the earth breathing (as it rumbles and shakes our Japanese style house with paper doors and window screens) have been at the forefront. The enigma of the Japanese culture, the deep reverence for nature (we whisper in the stone gardens) and also the destruction of it are recurring themes for me now. The Japanese ceramic sensibility and tradition has not escaped my notice and especially the notion of wabi-sabi (beauty in imperfection). It has taken me 5 years to gain some small understanding of this concept and for it to come through my hands into the clay. The satisfaction of creating a form that is pleasing to the eye, where dreams, sensibility and form unite is gratifying indeed. As my ikebana sensei repeatedly tells me “the empty space around is just as important as the material (flower/branch) itself”. This is the most profound message that I will take on my artistic travels. Portfolio Jennifer Thomas: ceramics, art, paintings. Jennifer Thomas, Jennifer A. Thomas, J. Thomas, J.A.
