S is for Sing

April 22, 2017

I drove two hours yesterday to pick up my son. The playlist blasting through the speakers had a good mixture of rock, pop, hip-hop, and selections from movie soundtracks I love. But then this song came on.

I've always loved it. It's been in every playlist I've ever created. It's particularly fun to shower dance to. I'm not sure if it's the melody, the words, or the men who sing it, but it's always made me feel happy and hopeful.

Well, on this two hour drive, I had an opportunity to listen to the words more carefully than I've ever done. I'm going to put them here because it's important to me. (Songwriters: Bob Dylan / George Harrison / Jeff Lynne / Roy K Orbison / Tom PettyEnd of the Line lyrics © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC)

Well it's all right, riding around in the breeze
Well it's all right, if you live the life you please
Well it's all right, doing the best you can
Well it's all right, as long as you lend a hand

You can sit around and wait for the phone to ring (end of the line)
Waiting for someone to tell you everything (end of the line)
Sit around and wonder what tomorrow will bring (end of the line)
Maybe a diamond ring

Well it's all right, even if they say you're wrong
Well it's all right, sometimes you gotta be strong
Well it's all right, as long as you got somewhere to lay
Well it's all right, everyday is judgment day

Maybe somewhere down the road aways (end of the line)
You'll think of me, wonder where I am these days (end of the line)
Maybe somewhere down the road when somebody plays (end of the line)
Purple haze

Well it's all right, even when push comes to shove
Well it's all right, if you got someone to love
Well it's all right, everything'll work out fine
Well it's all right, we're going to the end of the line

Don't have to be ashamed of the car I drive (end of the line)
I'm just glad to be here, happy to be alive (end of the line)
It don't matter if you're by my side (end of the line)
I'm satisfied

Well it's all right, even if you're old and grey
Well it's all right, you still got something to say
Well it's all right, remember to live and let live
Well it's all right, the best you can do is forgive

Well it's all right, riding around in the breeze
Well it's all right, if you live the life you please
Well it's all right, even if the sun don't shine
Well it's all right, we're going to the end of the line

I hope you took a couple of minutes to watch the video. Maybe you even sang along. I know I did yesterday. I think I played it a couple of dozen times in a row, with the volume of my little Scion XB at 60 (which is the max). By the last time I played it, my voice was going hoarse because I wasn't just singing along, I was screaming the words like I was at a concert trying to be heard over hundreds of thousands of other crazed fans. I wasn't just stretching to make those lyrics fit my life. It honestly felt like they did. And do. And will, going forward.

I struggle daily with negative thoughts and feelings, questioning whether I'm really a good person, whether the mistakes I've made will keep me from having happiness or joy in the future. I can't seem to not worry about what others think of me, or if I'm manufacturing evil where none exists. I am anxious all the time, wishing only that I could find some peace and believe it. All the time.

Well, I think I'm on my way. Tears streaming down my face, I played that song another two dozen times. Sometimes I was laughing, sometimes crying. I even bounced along in the driver's seat, attempting to dance while I raced along the highway on my way to the most important person in my life, my son. I didn't care if anyone thought I was crazy. I wouldn't have cared if I got pulled over for speeding (because I surely was). Something in my head clicked. Something in my heart burst.

Well, it's all right.
